Memories of Joan, from Stuart Clark
Created by Catherine 12 years ago
These words will differ from most tributes to Joan as my recall is from the position that of
a fellow professional and member of the British Institute of Professional Photography,
though my first association with Joan was a little before becoming a member.
Her display of excellent photographic greeting cards in a variety of subjects, but mainly
superb landscapes, caught my eye as I entered the Harrogate Spring Gift Fair. Own
publishing is a difficult market in which to become established and regrettably the
enterprise did not take off.
Later, as a member of the BIPP she had moved into Architectural Photography and the 360
degree moving exploratory image of Manchester Airport was stunning, ahead of it’s
time and now in great demand.
As a great favour to me she agreed to demonstrate and explain the technique to the Audio
Visual Group of the Royal Photographic Society seminar which I organised in Shipley. I can
recall and visualise the effects right now.
Joan’s first illness caused her to withdraw but eventually we were able to enjoy her
presence at monthly meetings when she endeavoured to catch up on new developments,
techniques and styles. Regrettably, and despite my encouragement and counselling during her time of adversity,
constraints prevented her from meeting the demands and expectations of today’s
commercial world and her undoubted talents and skills didn’t realise their potential.
Over the time I enjoyed her company her professionalism and her disposition was
unwavering.
Her gentle charm and quiet presence always gave me a feeling of there being something
special about Joan. Other tributes have filled some of the gaps and hopefully, my words
will perhaps reveal and add another dimension to fond your memories, to be enjoyed, and
now missed by many.
